Out of love and compassion for human suffering, Guru Har Kishan Ji agreed to dip his holy feet in water and pour charan amrit into a small chaubacha (tank) located within the Palace. While helping the patients in the epidemic, he himself caught smallpox and passed away. His residence, Raja Jai Singh's bungalow, later became the site now famously known as Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. 

After his death, Raja Jai Singh decided to dedicate his bungalow to the Guru's memory. It was in 1783 that the Sikh General Sardar Baghel Singh constructed a small shrine and a tank (Sarovar) over the well to protect its sacred, healing waters.
