South Korea aims to maintain the momentum in inbound tourism and has extended the waiver on visa processing charges for the next six months of this year. The goal is to keep it simple for travellers from key Asian locations, including the six countries, as well as India. The waiver is a provision that allows groups that cannot afford the standard processing fees to be relieved from the charges. According to the South Korean financial minister, this relief has been extended until June 2026 for select nations, which was initially scheduled to expire in December.
Countries Covered in the Extended Fee Waiver
The Korean Financial Minister Koo Yun-Cheol has included six other countries, including India, in the list:
- China
- Vietnam
- The Philippines
- Indonesia
- Cambodia
The relief covers the C-3-2 visas, which are short-term visas provided to visitors for various purposes, including tourism, visiting relatives, short business trips, or specific training programs. The exact date of expiration was Wednesday, but it has been extended as mentioned above. The South Korean Finance Minister stated, "The plan is to maintain momentum in inbound tourism," as per The Korean Times.
Fee Applied Over the Visa Processing
For now, travellers pay a processing fee of 18,000 Won, or approximately $12.46, for C-3-2 visas. However, tourists from the six selected nations will be able to continue entering South Korea without incurring this fee, thereby decreasing the overall travel costs for groups originating from and organised in these countries.
Korea has witnessed an overall surge in tourism, as more foreign visitors visited South Korea during November, reaching 17.3% beyond past years, and continuing to recover pre-pandemic levels. However, China is the largest source of tourism for South Korea, with 378,000 arrivals, followed by Japan´s 363,000 arrivals, Taiwan´s over 200,000, the United States' 133,000, and the Philippines with 60,000 arrivals.
Other Reasons Behind the Extended Waiver on Visa Processing
According to the policy, visa processing fees are waived, making travel more affordable and manageable. This policy targets key Asian source markets, playing a significant role in tourism. The higher-ups have stated that this move will support the nation and remain competitive when travel demand rises, and also help the tourism infrastructure and businesses that rely on international visitors.
The extended waiver of processing also promotes short-term visits, providing an excellent experience that ensures repetitive travel. The expectation is that the numbers will increase, benefiting other sectors, including accommodations, retail, transport, and entertainment, while also creating more jobs and boosting South Korea´s overall economy. Therefore, the policy is hugely supported and anticipated for providing further strength to the tourism between South Korea and selected nations.
Lastly, the extension of this policy is also a vital part of South Korea´s strategy to broaden its tourism scene, which includes key techniques such as boosting air connectivity, encouraging regional destinations, and aiming for a more balanced distribution of tourists across various regions beyond the megacities. The authority understood that the visa fee waiver would serve as a vital tool, offering support as the country strengthened its position in the regional and global tourism market.
